What Makes Us Write?

It's time for another guest blogger. Today I have the honor of introducing Qwillia Rain. She is another Loose Id author and also a fellow Midnight Seductions member.

Qwillia says on her website that her earliest memory of reading was at five or six years old, as she watched her brother do his homework across the table. "Reading upside down in kindergarten was fun and by the sixth grade I had gone through all the fiction and half of the non-fiction books in the school library." By the seventh grade, she had discovered her mother’s adult fiction when she was not re-reading the "Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens. "Who could not help but love the last line of the book by Sidney Carton, ‘Tis a far, far better thing that I do now, than I have ever done. Tis a far, far better place that I go to than I have ever been.’ How can you not fall in love with a romantic and courageous soul like that, huh?"

Statistics say a person will have at least six careers in their lifetime. Which probably means I'm on career three or four. I have had a number of jobs in my life. Having grown up in Las Vegas there was no end of job opportunities available to me. My love of books helped in guiding me, but not until long after I'd left high school. I started as a cashier in a drug store (similar to a Rite Aid, or CVS Pharmacy), then moved on to working as a finance assistant at a furniture store. From there I went from a receptionist at an armored car company, a change person in a casino, and finally my perfect job--bookstore employee! That could probably count as two careers (but only if you count longevity.)

Then I went and moved states. LOL.

The careers did the same mixing and matching depending upon location, availability, and length of time in the jobs--warehouse stock person, video store cashier, bill collector. I did eventually get into college where the career choices narrowed. First, it was high school math and English teacher. Then, when I realized I have little patience for older kids, I switched to elementary education. I liked it. I like it now, although I've specialized -- narrowed my focus to computer education.

Why am I babbling about the number of jobs I've had? Because, no matter which job I've had, I've always written. Even before I could work, I wrote. I wrote paranormal (before there was parnormal.) I wrote science fiction; I wrote mystery; most importantly, I wrote romance. Romance is the one genre I have never strayed from. The rollercoaster ride of emotions in a romance stimulate the imagination, tempt the senses, and stir fantasies of a personal happily ever after. Of all the genres available, romance is the one guaranteed to give you a satisfying ending, no matter how rocky the beginning.

Considering how important writing is to me, I don't see my abandoning it any time soon. As for the other career in teaching -- my interest waxes and wanes with each school year, but I persevere. I guess you could say it's a lot like writing. There are good days and bad. There are highs and lows. But most important, there are the lives you impact. As a teacher it's watching the interest blossom in a child's eyes. As a writer, it's opening a reader's eyes to another world even if only briefly.

Here's hoping you find the careers that most fulfill you and that the next book you read, you stop and think about the work the author put into introducing you to his or her world, if only briefly.
