Celebrating Cinco de Mayo - CJ Style

Hey all,

As many of you may know, yesterday was the fifth of May, more commonly known as Cinco de Mayo.  It's not the first time we've spent May fifth in a spanish speaking country, but I'm always shocked at the fact it isn't a holiday that people down here celebrate. I mean back home you're constantly bombarded with all the things you can do for Cinco de Mayo.

But now I understand. It was one of those things I'd thought was one way and when I did the research to see how it was celebrated here, I discovered that Cinco de Mayo was a Mexican holiday--and barely that--not a South American one at all. Huh.

And apparently we Americans are the ones that are all about the celebrating of it.  As least down here AND back home.  LOL

So I decided to celebrate in my own way. Since the only other latin American holiday I know about is Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), I figure sharing a bunch of really cool South American Cemetery pictures with have to do for Cinco de Mayo as well.  *big cheesy grin*

I know...it's a reach, but it's all I got.

So here are some of my favorite pictures I've taken down here in South America! I put a few of the latest ones on FB, but I'll post even more here. I really hope you enjoy them.

From Rio de Janeiro's Sao Joao Batista Cemetery

From San Jeronimo Cemetery in Cordoba, Argentina

Not the best taken care of cemetery. Actually, it was sorta appalling.

From Buenos Aires' La Recoleta Cemetery

So am I the only creepoid person who likes meandering in cemeteries? How about you all?

Until next time...

CJ England

I love to look through cemeteries! Really cool pictures. That one statue even shows a nursing mom! So cool. Must not be anyone left to care for the one cemetery. That's sad.

I like to visit Cedar Grove Cemetery in New Bern, NC. When I lived in New Bern I found a book with information about the headstones. I just found this today. http://www.findagrave.com/php/famous.php?page=cem&FScemeteryid=47072
There is a myth about the Arch at the main gate. Scroll to second article in this link page.

It is one of the things locals tell about the cemetery. That is long time residents who were in their seventies and eighties in 1980.

I read the story of Cinco de Mayo. The reason it is so popular in the US is that is more or less a Mexican-American cultural celebration. In Mexico it is mostly a day for military parades.
