Crikey -- R.I.P

Hey all,

Today is a sad day for me.  I had another blog planned, but then I got a phone call from my daughter back in the states who is taking care of our house for us.  She also is watching over my critters.  And she called with the sad news my sweet ferrert, Crikey had died.

Now Crikey, was getting along in years.  He was over six, which for a cut (castrated) ferret is about 66 (or thereabout) in human years  and he'd been diagnosed with insulinoma.  But most ferrets can live several more years with proper care.  And he'd been doing fine, so to have him suddenly die wasn't just a shock, but a painful surprise.

He was such a great friend.  He loved to snuggle and dook (which is fert speak for jumping around and giggling).  He was the perfect sock thief and loved to slip into someone's purse and snatch their keys.  He loved his hard rubber hot dog (no snickering) and his favorite place to sleep was in the little hammock at the top of the cage.  Preferably, on top of his brother or sister.  And his most endearing habit earned him his name--Crikey.

When he got tired, he'd just drop flat on the floor, his back feet stuck out behind him and his front feet laying along his sides.  And he'd go to sleep.   Just like that.  To some he looked like a speed bump, but to me he looked like a crocodile lying on the side of the river.  And that would make me think of the crocodile hunter, Steve Irwin, which would make me think of his famous comment...that's right...

Crikey.

Yes.  I know my thinking is oft times convoluted.  But I'll miss the little guy so much.  Leaving my pets behind to move to Macau was really difficult, but it was even harder knowing he died and I wasn't there to be with him.  I thank God for my daughter.  At least he was with someone who loved him when he crossed over the rainbow bridge.

As some of you may remember, Crikey is featured in my very sexy romantic tale, Hot Tubs and Hot Hunks.  He is Mandy's pet and helps get her and Sawyer back together when things go horribly wrong.  I added him in as comic relief and found he took over parts of the story.

Just like he took over my heart.

So, rest in peace sweet Crikey.  I know my other babies, Ginger and Grayboy, Koko and Yumyum, Rafferty and Danny will be there to greet you and show you the ropes.  I love you so much and will miss you nibbling my toes as I try to write the next great novel.

IN MEMORIUM--Crikey

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Pets are such an important part of our lives. They give unconditional love, and when they pass on it leaves a huge hole in your heart.

Sending lots of healing love to you and your family.

Hey Barbara,

Thank you so much. He was very special. Sometimes a pet just curls around your heart and squeezes.

I'll never forget him.

Thank you for the good thoughts, Patricia. He loved to curl up on my lap when I was writing. He was my darling, Crikey, and I'll miss him.

I know you've mentioned Crikey in your Yahoo group posts too so I feel like we all "knew" him a bit. How sad. *HUGS*

My heartfelt condolences, CJ. I know how it feels to lose a beloved pet. Just know that -- although he's having fun in his spot over the Rainbow Bridge, he still thinks of you!

WARM HUGS,

CJ, I am so sorry for your loss. I know how hard it can be to lose a fur(feather)baby.

CJ England said...

Thanks Des,

That's one of the reasons I wanted to share. In some ways he's become everyone's special friend.

CJ England said...

Thank you, Phylis. That means a lot. He was a good friend.

CJ England said...

Thanks, Rie.

I've had all sorts of animals and ferrets have the best of both dogs and cats. I miss having them dook at my feet.

Derek,

I still get teary-eyed at the oddest times, but I smile as I cry. I think of him looking at me with a sock in his mouth. He'd have this "what" look on his face and I'd just have to laugh.

Ilona,

He was a hoot to watch. When he and his brothers and sisters got going we'd watch them and forget to turn on the TV. Entertainment for all. LOL

Kari,

Thank you. Every time I read that poem, I get all sniffly. I've got a herd of babies waiting for me and it will be a most joyous reunion. *sniff*

ladydi,

Thanks so much. It never gets easier, but not having a pet in my life is even lonelier.

Sorry to hear about Crikey. I have a cat named Grayboy and notice you also had a pet by that name. Prayer for you in your loss. susan L.

CJ England said...

Thank you, Susan. My Grayboy (called Gayboy because my little brother couldn't pronounce the letter "r"), was a cat. He lived a good long life and I loved him very much.

I've had other kitties for many years and still Gayboy lives on in my memories.

I'm SO sorry for your loss! When I saw the picture of Crikey I felt a tug against my heart. I had a white ferret too ... my dear Max. I absolutely LOVED those little sideways dances and the chatter that went along with it! *laughs*

Ferrets are quite the characters! I still have the bump inside my nose when I made the terrible error in judgment and tried to dry him after a bath with a blowdryer.

Pets love us unconditionally and we lose a part of our hearts when they leave us.

Sounds to me as if he was quite loved and had a wonderful life. He was quite fortunate to have YOU for a 'mom' too!

My condolences. Pets become just like children to us and hold such a tender spot in our hearts. I feel the same way about my feline babies!

Aww CJ, I am so sorry to hear that Crikey passed away. ((huge hug))

I had a ferret many years ago and they are just adorable. Yes, they get into everything, but you just have to laugh. Crikey sounds like he was a very happy baby.

RIP Crikey.

CJ England said...

Thank you Layla,

I hope I was a good mommy. I know he was the best baby.

Crikey was a silver mitt ferret. You can see in the last pic. As he got older, his color faded away so he was white except for this band of gray over his shoulders.

He was a handsome little guy.

CJ England said...

Julie,

He was such a funny pet, I had to share stories.

I know everyone will miss him.

CJ England said...

Kaualoku,

Thank you so much. They do curl around your heart and never let go. No matter what the species, they are a joy.

CJ England said...

Thanks Maithe,

I've had ferrets for almost fifteen years and every one of them had their own personality and quirks. Crikey was special because not only was he fun, he loved to cuddle, too.

That I really loved.
